Billy Payne press release on Tiger

Billy Payne - Augusta Club Chairman, speaking on behalf of Augusta and The Master's released this statement:

“He forgot in the process (of becoming the world’s best golfer) that with fame and fortune comes responsibility, not invisibility,” Payne said.

“It is not simply the degree of his conduct that is so egregious here; it is the fact that he disappointed all of us, and more importantly, our kids and our grandkids.

“Our hero did not live up to the expectations of the role model we saw for our children.

“Certainly, his future will never again be measured only by his performance against par, but measured by the sincerity of his efforts to change.

“I hope he now realizes that every kid he passes on the course wants his swing, but would settle for his smile.

“I hope he can come to understand that life’s greatest rewards are reserved for those who bring joy to the lives of other people.

“We at Augusta hope and pray that our great champion will begin his new life here tomorrow in a positive, hopeful and constructive manner, but this time with a significant difference from the past. This year, it will not be just for him, but for all of us who believe in second chances.”

Now, I'm not one to judge... normally. But is this the largest pile of crap you have ever heard?
Coming from a guy who is the chair of a club that has fought over and over again to keep minorities and women from not just playing, but even being a member?

Tiger has been the Master's only attraction in the last 10 years and this guy all of a sudden wants to get moral on everyone. I don't know whether to laugh or throw up. This has got to be the best example of hypocrisy I've seen in a very long time.

I'm not giving Tiger a pass here. I'm not defending him against these statements either, but who in the hell does this guy think he is? I hope Tiger wins and then holds his hand out to shake the grandchild of Billy Payne, only to pull it back and out of reach when the kid reaches out. Tiger should be looking at Payne, and say SIKE!

It was a pile of crap!

But no more so than say, Tigers press conference on Monday.

The whole thing's a joke.

Wee Bobby is rolling in his grave, IMHO.

I agreed with you on Billy Payne, but I can do without a Tiger win.

I guess I am just getting tired of total dickheads in sports. I'd rather see Phil win. Gotta admit, though, that I like Vijay.

I don't really give a fat rat's ass one way or the other, but did I miss anything particularly heinous? Was Woods forcibly inject heroine into kindergartners by day while serial killing nuns at night? He cheated on his wife (granted, it was to a grand scale). This probably describes 20% of professional athletes.

The whole dog and pony show is just to rehab his image so he can regather sponsors and endorsements. For people to get all indignant on one side or the other is nonsensical to me. Play or don't play. Hire him or don't hire him. Just STFU about it already. The soap opera of the golf world is perhaps the least significant thing going on in the world right now.
